The river is the oldest witness. It has carried slave ships and cargo boats, tourist ferries and rubber dinghies. It has carried the hopeful and the desperate, the willing and the unwilling. It does not judge. It simply moves.
Migrants is the story of all of us who have ever crossed a border, whether of land or of identity.
The novel follows three protagonists whose journeys intersect across continents and centuries. Arjyo Sinha, a Bengali chartered accountant from Kolkata, leaves behind a promising career and a woman he loves to build a new life in London. There, he meets Clémence Le Roux de la Bourdonnais, a Franco-Mauritian economist from a
family whose fortune was built on sugar, slavery, and indentured labour. Their marriage is a collision of worlds: the descendants of those who signed the contracts and those who signed the ledgers. As they raise their children, Neil and Aakashi, they discover that progress is not a straight line, but a painful, cyclical process driven by both hope and desperation.
Rafiqul Islam, a farmer from Bangladesh, watches the Padma River swallow his land. With nothing left to lose, he sells everything and entrusts his life to smugglers. His journey takes him through the deserts of Iran, the prison of Libya, the mountains of Italy, and the waters of the Channel. At the holding place in Libya, he meets a Somali doctor who has lost everything - his wife, his children, his country - who gives Rafiq a message to deliver to his sister if the doctor fails to make the journey.
Sophie de Speville, a Creole Mauritian activist-lawyer working in London, receives the doctor's message when Rafiq is rescued from the sea and taken to a detention centre in Kent. With the help of Neil and Aakashi, Sophie begins to unravel a riddle concealed in the doctor's message - a trail that leads to a labyrinth stretching across continents, at the centre of which sits something far larger than a single crime network.
The novel moves across time and place: from the slave ships of Nantes to the indigo plantations of Bihar, from the partition of India to the camps of Calais. It explores the lives of those who move - the indentured labourers, the Windrush generation, the Ugandan Asians, the Bangladeshi farmers, the Gambian teacher, the orphaned Central African child - and those who profit from their movement. It asks uncomfortable questions about who owns history, who gets to tell it, and who pays for it.
Migrants is a novel about migration, memory, and the stories we tell to make sense of both. It is a novel about the new men and women we become when we cross borders - and the old selves we carry inside us like sediment at the bottom of a river. It is a reminder that the goal is not to find new continents, but to become new people of who came and who were there.
